Definitely share your happiness at the feedback/input aspect of the speech – and also the talk of 'reinventing deliberative democracy for the modern age'. Guess that definitely comes under the 'big picture' heading, though, and agree with your assessment that those things might not get turned into action for a while yet.

I want to see stuff getting done on that front, though, so I'm trying to get a little co-design/govcamp type event together – love to have you along if you're interested... http://www.delib.co.uk/dblog/building-britains-digital-future-a-chance-to-reinvent-deliberative-democracy-for-the-modern-age/

I agree on the exciting big picture stuff - I really hope we're looking at VRM here.... but all of it misses (and both Brown Stephen Timms dodged) the issue of the Digital Economy Bill which will actually be cutting people off from the Internet, the so-called "foundation of modern freedom" that Brown called it. All well putting MyGov at the heart of public service access but if the public are prevented from accessing it (either through disconnection or systematic closure of public wifi) then what Brown giveth with one hand Mandelson (and the BPI) taketh away with the other.

Yes, whoever is in power, in this regard, I just want to get there - I blogged about this last August. However, as a part-time LocGov systems accountant and part-time designer, I would like to see two things:
1 - Govt really getting it on with open source long-term, let's invite everyone to the party and embrace the best of innovative ideas and simple, unladen ways of doing things
2 - 'lead from the circle' Shutters down for a few weeks, change of party, etc., if Govt remembers that in this most certainly, the people can lead and the Govt can facilitate then MyGov really can be ours, and every user can be a designer, a creator, a most active participant.

So having tied local government up in loops around information handling with Government Connect, the same are supposed to release council tax balance details out into the wild? For a start, direct debit has always been a favoured option and you can't get more electronic than that! Secondly there's a range of application suppliers and no generally accepted citizen authentication. Thirdly Council Tax, after direct debits will be small fry and a great chunk will be lost paying credit card fees...

The relative success of the DVLA has gone to someone's head!

Does this REALLY sound like VRM? Or is it a way of collecting all your data into one place via the back door. I'm suspicious.

Simon

Agree about VRM.

Your last sentence, while true, masks the fact we have added about £ 700 billion in additional debt over the last 10 years. The public will need to work hard to pay that back and we have "lost" a fair amount I would say.
