Indeed.

Do you know how the data were gathered in the Dutch project you cited? It feels like a TheyWorkForYou/MySociety-type project...

True Stuart... but the right time to build that dataset would be immediately after an election, wouldn't it?

The idea of non-geographical representation is not as far-fetched an idea as it might initially sound. Hong Kong's legislature is half-geographically elected, half 'functional constituencies' like Engineering, Finance, Textiles & Garments, Financial Services, and Education. And the Irish Senate is mostly nominated by 'vocational panels'.

I like the MP-dating-service idea but what was the purpose of their study? On one level it's fun to see how one matches against a Diane Abbott or a Vince Cable. But more importantly - and as you suggest - it raises the question of why someone's choice of MP is restricted to location.

Perhaps I'm just ignorant and there are many very good reasons for the system as it is, but I like the idea of being able to support someone whose views more closely resemble mine.

To put a similar thing together here in the UK I guess the first thing would be to profile each MP against a distinct set of criteria. Could take some time to build this dataset ;)
